He has been invited to perform as a soloist by such orchestras as the Bayerische RundFunk Orchester, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Prague Philharmonia, the St-Petersburg Philharmonic, and several orchestras in France including the Orchestre d’Auvergne, and the Orchestre National d’Ile de France. He has performed recitals and chamber music concerts in such prestigious venues as Paris’ Cité de la Musique, Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts, Cologne’s Philharmonie, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, Prague’s Rudolfinium, Carnegie Hall, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, where he is regularly invited back.

Nicolas has performed in chamber music with such artists as Alexandre Tharaud, Bertrand Chamayou, Michel Dalberto, Antoine Tamestit, Lise Berthaud, Quatuor Ebène, Quatuor Modigliani, Quatuor Ysaÿe, Alexei Ogrintchouk, David Guerrier, Magali Mosnier, to name just a few.

He developed a strong interest for period instruments and has collaborated with Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d’Astrée, whith whom several projects have now been launched for the near future.

Born in Paris, Nicolas won several international competition prizes such as the Munich ARD competition at only 19, Dos Hermanas in Spain at 20 and the ICA Young Artists Competition in the United-States in 2001. In 2004, he was an ECHO-Rising Star artist and toured the world round.

From 2000 to 2007, Nicolas was co-principal at the Orchestre National de France. Before then, he had held the same position at the European Union Youth Orchestra (cond. Bernard Haitink) with which he toured worldwide, conducted by such great maestros as Carlo Maria Giulini, Colin Davis, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mstislav Rostropovich,…In 1999, he was awarded the Mick-Baynes Award as the Year’s best wind instrumentalist. In 2000, he was admitted to the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (Daniel Harding).

Nicolas is very much involved in contemporary music, both as a soloist and as a chamber artist with various ensembles (2 e 2 m, Court-Circuit, Alternance, Ars Nova, Itinéraire, TM +….). In 2003, he was dedicated two clarinet solo pieces by composers Eric Tanguy (Capriccio) and Jacques Lenot (Tormentoso). He recently recorded these two pieces along with other 20th century masterpieces for clarinet solo (label Intrada, nov 2004) in a CD that was very well reviewed internationally. He released in 2007 a Mozart chamber music CD with Antoine Tamestit, Alexei Ogrinchuk, Bertrand Chamayou, David Guerrier, Julien Hardy.

Nicolas teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon and is Buffet-Crampon’s representative throughtout the world.
